Category AB License

Steps for obtaining a Firearms Licence Category AB

Category A

Rimfire rifles, single or double-barrel shotguns, paintball guns, air rifles, and powerheads.

Category B

Centre-fire rifles (other than semi-automatic), shotgun/rifle combinations. Lever action shotguns with a magazine capacity of no more than five rounds.

  1. Complete a weapons safety course for category AB. (Please call (07) 4052 1911 to talk to Cairns Shooters Supplies to book your safety course)
  2. Have a genuine reason to own a category AB firearm. Either by joining Sporting Shooters SSAA or obtaining approval from a property owner who owns enough land to qualify to meet the requirements. (To join SSAA click here SSAA or if you have a property owner's approval - Google search "Queensland Weapons Licence form one" and fill that out.
  3. Complete the online firearms application (Weapons Licencing)
  4. When filling out your online firearms application, upload your "Weapons Safety Course statement of attainment" that you were sent after completing your Weapons Safety Course.
  5. When filling out your online firearms application it requires proof of your genuine reason to obtain the licence, upload your "SSAA membership or your Recreational Annexure.
  6. Once all filled-in and supporting documents are uploaded Submit your application.
  7. You will receive a Confirmation email on the application with a reference number and receipt of your payment made.
  8. The email will be sent to you with instructions to go to a Post Office to present your Identification (100 points required) and to have your photo taken.

All of the above will be clearly explained when you do your Firearms safety course and at that point, you can ask the instructor any further questions or concerns you have.
